When I first stared writing, I was younger, more energetic and could wake at 5am.  Now that I’m older and share a wonderful home with a beautiful wife and spirited children, it’s much more difficult to wake at such an early hour.  To leave a warm bed and find my way through the darkness for a shower. And then to the lonliness downstairs.  I used to write longer works.  Long and wordy, methodically thought-out.  My friends kindly referred to these as essays.  And some were published.  With the birth of each child and the demands of making a living, my work gradually became shorter.  I didn’t feel the need to explain so much, leaving the reader to fill in the blanks.  My friends kindly referred to these as poems.  And so it is.  Sometimes I write poems.  And sometimes I write essays.  But I always dwell in a good kingdom with lively conversation, interesting children and my wife, artist Deborah Larson King.  Thanks for reading – dk

you might try the 315 experiment where a bunch of crazy poets (including me) get up at 315am to write every night during the month of august…

i just stay up late and left sleep behind early in pregnancy
