Today, Here, Now – Listen
I wanted to write something positive.
Tell you about the weather -
how blue the Michigan sky has been,
how green the grass in our yard,
the slightest cool breeze during our evenings.
I wanted to tell you I have healthy children,
a loving and supportive wife who’s also a friend,
a home and plenty of food -
like missing a doomed flight,
born on the right continent at the right time -
spending the rest of my days
converting survivor’s guilt to thanksgiving.

I enjoy your poetry so much, Darren. Every word counts, as it should, and you beautifully express my feelings exactly. “like missing a doomed flight” I, too, feel that lucky.
today here and now is a great place to be, anytime, anyplace, any instance. I suppose some may not be so lucky, an excellent reminder to reach out to the less fortunate, reminding ourselves that adversity breeds character, character, hope, and in hope, love. This is a great piece Darren, I like it! Peace… cindy
Alison, thanks. I really enjoy the opportunity to have this exchange with readers and writers.
I’m trying to make a conscious effort to write and publish more frequently, and in real-time, as I did here, in the face of a busy schedule. But who isn’t busy right? (no excuses!) Best, Darren
Cindy, I love the way you mapped this out for me – adversity breeds character, character hope and hope, love – wonderful. My wife says I “map” things out through my writing – getting from one place to another; hence, she is the author of my blog title. You have a way of summarizing the essence of so much of my work…take care, Darren
Wow. It always feels like you’re writing what I think and feel. Then I decide you’re writing about being human and alive and hurting and hopeful. Guess that’s all of us. Love this poem, Darren.
Thanks Judy! I love your perspective on my work…thanks for stopping by and sharing…best, Darren
This poem is wonderful! I also liked the one about the painting in your wife’s studio. My oldest daughter studies painting and is painting in her studio right now! She loves to paint and draw:)
Hello Carolina! Funny how some poems, like this one, just come about seemingly on their own. I have to say, I did like the title on this one – it seems so unlike me that way. It came to me in a rather loud way, like TODAY! HERE! NOW! LISTEN! – not like me at all. That is so awesome that your daughter loves to paint. When my wife was a little girl she loved to paint and draw too. It was (and is) her favorite thing to do. Your home will have works of original art where you can see the brush strokes – I love that. Best, Darren
